Working on Math Problems

"Let me show you how I learned it..."

At home, the "homework helper" may become frustrated when helping with math and may want to, "Just show them how they learned it." However, children are learning math differently than in the past. The Common Core Standards for Mathematics (2009) and our aligned curriculum (2015) ask students to use strategies families may be unfamiliar with. The standards emphasize developing understanding of concepts and less on the tricks we may have been taught in the past. Families should avoid teaching "tricks" too soon. Trust in the development of conceptual understanding. Each unit in the Math Expressions curriculum K-5 comes with explanations of these strategies to help families support children's development towards high levels of math and college and career readiness. Math at home can start early. Read about the the development of student generated strategies and early counting activities to support your children's math thinking.
